  2. Hi Romola,

    Welcome to my space.
Both "Kanghujam" and "Takhellambam" belong to "Ningthouja".

  3. yam khang-ee na nagdi..but how come my surname has a yek???

My grandfather told me that we don't have any yek....Yek is only for those clans originated from Manipur..eg...Ningthoujam...Laishram...Angom.....Moirang ..etc...

We, specially my family migrated to Manipur in 1950's from Assam. We were belived to be craftmen groups of the King at that time and our surname has been assigned to us by the king..some says we originate from Bengal...but we do have a gotra...sangilia gotra.. :)

  4. Well...every "yumnak" of meitei/meetei community in or outside Manipur has a yek assigned to them. This is as per the record available.

    1. there is no Gotra like "mutum' in Hinduism. all gotras are assigned after the Sages name- Like Kashyap, Anghira, Bharadwaj, Shandilya, Soukalin, Shandilya......

  18. Nice work. I've been looking for this list, finally I found it here.

I'm impressed with your effort Chingkhei.

Here I'm confused with something. Let's take and example with this

    KONJENGBAM [luwang][angom][moirang] [leisangthem]

What's the relation between Luwang, Angom, Moirang & Leishangthem?

I would love to know the relationship and it's significance.

    Thank you
    Waikhu

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hi Waikhu,

    Thanks for your valuable comment...
Basically, "Konjengbam" comes under "Khaba Nganba" but there are some "Konjengbam" considering themselves as "Salang Leishangthem". Another example: "Chingakham", as per record, comes under "Salang Leishangthem", but you will come across many Chingkham considering themselves as "Khaba Nganba". We really need a collective research to sort out this confusion.

But i heard that if the gotra is different there no problem in marrying even if we belong to the same Yek. Is that true? May i also know which Gotrs we belong to .. I mean for both me n her? Pls let me know.. I need to convince her if there is a way

    Awaiting ur Reply ASAP.

  40. Hi Pebam,

    Welcome to my blog.

Sorry to learn that both of you belong to "Ningthouja". But don't take harsh action before consulting a senior/scholar.

Since "ningthouja/mangang" is the largest yek, there are many ways to get along, so please consult a scholar as soon as possible.

  41. Hi, Mr AC Meitei
it is very nice to have a plate form to discuss on this topic, so i would like to thank u first of all.
i m looking for the yek salai for yumnak Hemmam but i could not find it, there is a very similar yumnak Hemnam under salai mangang, so i m wondering wether it is the same yumnak or not. could u please find out on this matter and post it. wether hemmam comes under yek salai or it dose not have salai like some other yumnaks such as kshetrimayum

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hi,
I would like to share some of my opinions on this problem of marrying the same YEK-SALAI. Looking from a very rational point of view and scientifically speaking the only problem I see in inter yek marriage is the consequences of INBREEDING.
It is evident that breeding between closely related siblings is very likely to produce offsprings with birth defects. It is due to the lack of dominent genes in both the parents for that particular deformities.
When parents pass on their genes to their offspring, the offspring recieves genes from both the parents, both the parents have some dominent genes and recesive genes, the offspring will have a new improved genes recieving the dominent ones from each parents forming his dominent genes and recesive ones forming his recesive genes. Say for example this particular boy has a recesive gene for determining the development of brain function, there will be no problem at all to him but if he mate with a girl who also has recesive gene for determining the development on brain function the offspring they have is very likely to be mentally retarded.
So the yumnaks in the same yek salai are very closely related and are very likely to have similar recesive genes, thereby producing defective childrens. And when a parent has a challanged offspring they are very likely to have depression problems and associated psyhological problems stemming out of that offspring resulting in a not very happy family.
This is the only reason why they say "yek lounaradi awa ana tai".
THE SOLUTION IS NOT TO HAVE YOUR OWN OFFSPRING AND OPT FOR ADOPTION.
THERE IS ANOTHER SOLUTION, IF U R VERY RICH, U CAN MAP OUT YOUR DNA AND YOUR LOVERS DNA AND CHECK OUT WETHER U HAVE SIMILAR RECESIVE GENES, BUT IT IS VERY COSTLY AND TECHNOLOGY IS NOT AVAILABLE IN INDIA.

Thank you very much for visiting my blog.

Basically Oinam belongs to Khuman, and a khuman yek can't marry someone from khuman yek itself. But, some section of "Oinam" [though controversy prevailed] belongs to "Angom" yek salai too, please consult family elders for clarification.

  66. Nice to see your works for collecting sagei yek and salais. Most of the people says, yek and salais are the same. Some says, yek and salais are not the same. When I was young I could hear the discussion on yek salais among elderly folks. They said that a meitei is uniquely spefified by yek taret salai mapal. A yek may have different salais. In your example, you mention angom, moirang, sarang-leisangthem etc in the surnames of ningthouja or mangang yek. Are they meaning salais? For example,
    CHANAM [angom] [salangleisangthem]
    NGANGOM [luwang] [moirang]
Does it means that Chanam has manngang yek and two different salais, and Ngangom has mangang as yek and two different salais? Please clarify on that. And I fdound many of the sageis or surnames are put wrongly in different yeks. Please verify your lists of surnames under different yeks, otherwise young people would unneccessarily end their relation thinking that they are of the same clan.

Thank you once again for your effors.
    A Meitei Singh

I have a confusion about my YEK, hoping that you'll help me out, I am passing to you as a query. My surname is ASEM and as per my understanding it was originally under KHUMAN but somehow it got changed to MOIRANG. Till today nobody is fully aware the solid reason of being changed but the worst part is some of the ASEM are still referring to KHUMAN and some at MOIRANG. Mine according to our parent's direction belongs to MOIRANG. Will you please help me in clearing out this big confusion. Thanks in advance.

Bishnupriya manipuris have their own clan names i.e. Known as ''LOKEI' for eg:- ningaaja lokei, lempa lokei, thokchuba lokei, pangsiko lokei, koireng aaja lokei, tanga lokei, laangtia lokei, selkomchipa lokei, keeifakhullakpa lokei, enoupa lokei etc, etc. There are almost close to 100 clans in bishnupriya manipuri. Bishnupriya manipuris are not bengalis, because bishnupriya manipuris have their own lokei(clan) whereas bengalis don't have any lokei system. If you don't know about their origin, then don't speak rubbish here.

Khwairakpam is a little distinct one but it will always be a part of Ningthouja Salai. Khwairakpam is a cousin of Ningthouja, i.e. Khwairakpam is part of Ningthouja and so Khwairakpam belongs to Ningthouja Salai.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yes of course. one hs to b sure dat khuman moirang luang angom mangam r bishnupriya manipuris n hence other dan dose r meiteis. since meitei hv since long embrassed goudio boishnob religion, dere should nt b any bar to marry a meitei girl by a bishnupriya manipuri boy. dere r many meiteis who ifentify demselves as sanamahi group of meiteis n to marry wd such girl is a matter of personal previlege. manipur state obc list notified sanamahi separately as one group among other obc groups !
